Exploring Quality of Experience in the Spanish Capital

Thinking of a QoE (R)evolution

This years QoMEX was held in Madrid, Spain – a very welcomed destination for the autumn weather! Chaired by Narciso García (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) and Pablo Pérez (Nokia) the event kicked off on Monday 29th of October with the AOMedia Research Workshop. After a wonderful Spanish welcome, the first event set the tone for the upcoming week of research presentations, keynotes and demos!

The event itself was held in the wonderful Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Puerta de Toledo Campus located close to the heart of the city. Situated in one of Madrids oldest neighbourhoods, the campus provided the perfect venue with excellent links to transportation and a fantastic research vibe!

TUS at QoMEX 2025

This year I was delighted to attend the event alongside Dr. Niall Murray as two of our PhD students had the opportunity to present their work at the conference:

  • Aaron McEvoy (PhD) presented his demo on “Building a Low-Cost Immersive Haptic Feedback Glove for Virtual Reality”. The research is a continuation of his undergraduate work exploring the utility of custom haptic devices for applications in Ulnar Nerve rehabilitation. Through this process, Aaron aims to utilize feedback from sensors to achieve a higher Quality of Experience during rehabilitation sessions.
  • Danny Hewitt (PhD) also took to the stage to present an overview and demo of his work on “Haptic Symphony: Enabling Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals to Experience Music Through Haptic Devices and XR Technology”. Supported by TUS RISE, the work is a collaborative effort with Tupac Martir, an artist from the world renown Satore Studio exploring the utility of haptic devices and how they can increase quality of experience of individuals who are impacted by hearing difficulties.

Both Aaron and Danny took part in the PhD mentoring programme targeted at early stage researchers reporting some fresh insight from the mentors.

Madrid, Home of Patatas Bravas and Tapas

It wouldn’t be a visit to Spain without sampling the fantastic Patatas Bravas and Tapas on offer. The conference social events presented some fine dining into the evenings along side a guided tour of the history sites of the city. Although fantastic, the highlight of the conference was having a personal guided tour from Professor Pablo Caesar. Originally from Madrid, it was a delight to have a local, guide us around the historic city centre with the highlight of the tour being a visit to the world famous Las Bravas, home of the Patatas Bravas. The venue is not only home to the dish, but holds patents on their own secret smoky and spicy recipe which they have served since the 1960s!
